The Reliable Boole of Out-Door Games. Edited by HENRY CHADWICK. PREFACE. In presenting The Reliable Book of Otjt-Doob Games to the American public, it is onlynecessary to state that it is a work designed forthe special use of American boys, and as suchpresents the chapters on instruction in ournational game of baseball as its chief attrac-tion. It would be beyond the reach of a hand-book of this kind to cover all of the field gamesof ball in vogue ; and, therefore, only the mostprominent games have been selected for thisbook. The editor of this book is so well known asthe leading authority on our national game, asalso a writer practically familiar with the prom-inent sports of the period, that it is needless tostate that the instructions given will be those ofan established authority as well as of a popu-lar writer. One of the characteristics of nearly all ofthe handbooks of sports hitherto published, is,that they are most of them reprints of theworks of English writers on the subject
