The officers and crew wereall volunteers, and although the Bear had just returned from a sixmonths cruise in Arctic waters, she was prepared, fitted out, andsailed from Seattle, Wash., November 27,1S97, just three weeks fromthe date of her arrival from the North. Ten months later she returned again to Seattle, bringing four crewsof wrecked whalers, and having fully carried out all the orders andaccomplished all the purposes of the expedition without loss oraccident of any WILLIAM McKINLEY,President cf the United
