Anaesthetic inhaler, 1900. This is a Shield open inhaler. It consists of a metal cylinder, shaped to fit the face, with a wire framed chamber with a hinged lid. A sponge was placed in the chamber, and volatile liquid anaesthetic (such as ether or chloroform) was dripped on it, allowing the patient to inhale a mix of the evaporated anaesthetic and air.
