The ends of screwed staybolts shall be rivetedover or upset by equivalent process. The outside ends of solidstaybolts, 8 in. and less in length, shall be drilled with a hole atleast 3/16 in. diameter to a depth extending at least 1/2 in. beyondthe inside of the plates, or hollow staybolts may be used. Onboilers having a grate area not exceeding 15 sq. ft., or the equivalentin gas- or oil-fired boilers, the drilling of staybolts is optional. Solidstaybolts over 8 in. long, and flexible staybolts of either the jointedor ball-and-socket type, need not be drilled. Staybolts used in Not Less ffC=n5. When channel irons or othermembers are securely riveted to the boiler heads for attachingthrough stays, the transverse stress on such members shall notexceed 12,500 lb. per sq. in. In computing the stress, the sectionmodulus of the member shall be used without addition for thestrength of the plate. The spacing of the rivets over the supportedsurface shall be in conformity with that specified for staybolts. If the outstanding legs of the two members are fastenedtogether so that they act as one member in resisting the bendingaction produced by the load on the rivets attaching the membersto the head of the boiler, and provided that the spacing of theserivets attaching the members to the head is approxi
