Yellow 40 pengo Magyar Posta stamp in a dramatic series entitled 'Restoration', issued Budapest, Hungary, November 1945
A Magyar Posta stamp in a series entitled 'Restoration', issued Budapest, November 1945. Hungary was occupied by the Germans in April 1943, after the annihilation of the Hungarian 2nd Army at Stalingrad and increasing anti-axis pressure in Hungary threatened a separate peace with the Soviets. At the end of the War, the retreating Germans demolished road, rail and telecommunications. Here, against the rising sun of a new beginning and both ruined and restored images of the Chain Bridge, Budapest, we seen a huge workman holding two ornate building blocks with images of historic buildings, the broken chains of Nazism at the end of an outstretched hand holding a mason's hammer. A dramatic image designed by graphic artist Gyorgy Konecsni, who came to prominence as a stamp designer in 1940.
