Electrostatic generator, 19th century artwork. Static electricity is generated by friction from a 3- metre-wide wheel of plate glass (upper centre) rubbing past three equally-spaced iron 'rubbers'. The revolving glass plate runs off steam power and revolves at 40 revolutions per minute. The machine could produce electric sparks up to 50 centimetres in length. It was constructed by a Mr Warner, for the Royal Panopticon of Science and Art, Leicester Square, London, England, in 1853. Artwork from The Circle of Sciences, London, 1862-67.
