MODEL RELEASED. Caesarean section. Nurse holding a newborn baby before wrapping it in a blanket. The white substance on the baby's skin is known as vernix, which lubricates the passage through the birth canal in vaginal deliveries. This baby has just been delivered by Caesarean section, where it was delivered through an incision made in its mother's abdomen and uterus. This procedure, being completed by surgeons seen behind the nurse, is performed when it is difficult or dangerous to deliver the baby in the normal way. Photographed at St. Mary's Hospital in Lacor, Gulu, Uganda.
