Mariamman is a form of the Hindu Goddess Kali. It is believed that illnesses are caused by her anger. On her "birthday" everyone dresses up, carrys water and tumeric from the river to the temple. Women cook Pongal a mixture of rice and sugar and boil it until it boils over. A pot of pongal boiling over in rural tamil Nadu as a sign of prosperity , the pongal is a mixture of rice and sugar to be eaten as a celebration of Mariamman ( Kali ) Birthday. This festival is particulary celebrated in Tamil Nadu.
