Cerium oxide nanoparticles, coloured high-resolution transmission electron micrograph (TEM). The image reveals the arrangement of cerium oxide nanoparticles (bright angular 'slashes' at the bottom of the image) supported on a titania substrate (background). This combination is being studied as a catalyst for splitting water molecules to release hydrogen as fuel, plus similar catalytic reactions. A 2-nanometre scale bar is at bottom left.
