Local mosque, Herodion, Judea, Palestine


Local mosque at the base of the Herodion or the Herodium, an artifical mountain built on the verge of the Judean Desert on the command of King Herod the Great(74/73 - 4 B-C), a Roman Client King of Judea, to contain a fortified palace and upon his death the king's mausoleum, was completed about 37 fortress was first captured by the Romans 71 , but was still of significance during the Bar Kokhba resurrection against the Romans 132-136 The site is described by the contemporary historian Jordanes. Excavation began in 1972 and was carried on until the lead archaeologist, Ehud Netzer's death in 2010. The site is managed by the Israel National Parks Authority.
