Testing for carbon dioxide production. Flask of yeast in warm sugar water producing carbon dioxide. The lime water in the test tube goes cloudy in the presence of this gas. Carbonic acid is formed as the carbon dioxide dissolves in water, and the acid is neutralized by the lime water into the carbonate ion, producing the cloudy liquid seen here.
