Iowa, which was at one time the medical depart-ment of the State University, but is now consolidated with DrakeUniversity, at Des Moines, Iowa. Soon after the first railroadwent through North English, Iowa, Dr. Nicol and his wife settledin that town, where he purchased property and contributed hisshare to the growtli and development of local resources. At hisown expense he circulated the first petition for election that re-sulted in the incorporation of the town and he was instrumentalin having the township divided into two voting precincts, with. He donated one of the finest lotsin the town as a building site for the Methodist parsonage, servedseveral years as a member of the board of education, and assistedin the establishment of a high school and the erection of the splen-did high school building that is used at present. At one time heowned the North English Record, still published in the town. Heerected a frame building for the post office, and when that burnedhe erected a fine brick building for the town and the government,which was also destroyed by fire in 1905.
