The extent of the injury is often difficult to determine. It may be merely a crushing of the bone, in which case it is not easy to distinguish the injury from changes which are the result of disease, or there may be a distinct fine of separation. The metatarsal bones are frequently involved in injuries to the foot. Fractures may be transverse or longitudinal. Fissured fracture of the bone is not uncommon. The phalanges are also frequently injured. Two positions of the foot should always be taken when looking for fractures. Stereoscopic pictures are very helpful in doubtful FlG. 141.
