Osteoarthritis of the shoulder. X-ray of the ball and socket joint in the shoulder of a patient suffering from significant osteoarthritis. The ball (round, upper centre) can be seen touching the bone of the socket as the cartilage that normally coats the surfaces has been worn away. This can cause pain and stiffness of the joint. For images of surgery to correct this, by replacing the surface of the ball (hemiarthroplasty), see collection number 1525.
