Common violet (Viola odorata), also called garden violet, wood violet, sweet violet, and English violet, showing leaves, roots, and seed pods produced
Common violet (Viola odorata), also called garden violet, wood violet, sweet violet, and English violet, showing leaves, roots, and seed pods produced by cleistogamous, or automatically self-pollinating, flowers. In the spring, violets produce colorful, scented blossoms that may be fertilized by insects. In summer, the plant produces self-pollinating flowers near the base, as shown here, which then produce pods full of seeds that are dispersed by Formica polyctena ants. (The pod on the right is broken open in this photo to show seeds inside it.)
