Attention has already been directed tothe large capacity of the tender in coal and half-tone engravings. As in tlie case ofthe tender frame the truck frames werecast in one piece by the CommonwealthSteel Company. This frame has a totallength of 11 ft. 9 in. and a width of 7 in. It is cast with two transoms andan opening between them for the centerplate and truck bolster. The side framesare cast in the form of an inverted U atthe center and wheels, as shown in thehalf section at the center, while on the lineA B it is of box shape with one side par-tially cut away to give access to the equal-izer C. The transoms are box-shaped withhorses for the bolster hangers. The bol-ster on which the side bearings are cast isH-shaped in plan and is suspended fromthe transoms of the frame by the hang-ers D. An interesting feature of this truck is thespring suspension, which reminds one ofthat of the Norfolk & Western six-wheeled. PLAN AND SIDE ELEVATION OF TENDER FRAME OF DENVER & RIO GRANDE LOCOMOTIVE.(BUILT BY COMMONWEALTH STEEL CO.) surface £> is a similar arc with its centerat the center of A. The radius of each is10 15/16 in. The seat F in the cradle hastwo inclined surfaces G and H. Whenthe truck is in its normal central position, the inclined surface G stands at right an-gles to a radius drawn from the center ofA to the point of intersection of the twocurves D and C, and the surface H is atright angles to a similar radius drawnfrom the center of B. Then if, for example, the cradle moves tothe right the rocker turns on B and A liftsfrom its seat. As the distance from A toB is 3K in., the rocker rests in the angle water. This necessitated a correspond-ingly heavy frame and truck. The accom-panying engraving illustrates a plan andside elevation of about one-half the lengthof the frame. The remarkable thing
