The followingis a brief summary of the resultsof a series of experiments made byDr. Franliland on the manufactureof hydrocarbon resin gas: Eachhundred weight of resin was dis-solved by heat in 7|- gallons of theresin oil of a former working, andthe liquid, whilst still hot, was runinto one of the retorts, by meansof a siphon tube, in a stream aboutthe thickness of a crowquill, whilstwater-gas, generated in the secondretort, was admitted as describedabove. The mixed gases were thenmade to stream through the usualform of condensing apparatus, andwere afterwards compelled to passsuccessively through wet and drylime purifiers before they reachedtlie gas-holder. In order to securea uniform mixture of the gas pro-duced in each experiment, it wasallowed to remain at rest in the gas-holder for at least twelve hours be-fore a specimen was withdrawn foranalysis. In the following tables both thepractical and analytical results aregiven. Practical Results. Averageevolu-tion of Gas perhour. Materials Consumed. Products Obtained. Eesin. Coal. Char-coal. Lime.
