Channel Tunnel engineer with an French Boring Machine which is breaking through into a UK tunnel, 40m under the seabed
A Channel Tunnel engineer is reflected in the water in front of a French Tunnel Boring Machine TBM with its cutter head rotating, which is breaking through into the UK South Rail Tunnel. The French TBM had excavated undersea from its starting point on the French coast and had met its English counterpart TBM in mid Channel. The English machine had been driven to one side and entombed, allowed the French TBM to breakthrough into the English tunnel. The rotating head of the TBM was completing the last section of the south rail tunnel. The Channel Tunnel was the greatest construction project of the 20th century and is considered to be one of the wonders of the modern world.
