But the reader of Scottish history will bedisappointed if, in the aspect of the baronial dwelling, he expect to see afortalice worthy of the memorable siege, in which Sir Thomas Maule, forthree weeks, resisted the force of Edward. Though some ancient features ofthe edifice still remain, they are to be seen only in detail, and are absorbedin the reconstructions, which make the castle appear an irregularly builtmansion about a century old.
