Volunteers at the International Bird Rescue Research Center clean a Grebe of oil after a British Petroleum operated supertanker spilled more than 300,000 gallons of Alaskan Crude oil in the San Pedro Channel off the Southern California coast in 1990. In May of 2010 California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger announced that he no longer supports new offshore oil drilling off the California coast after the massive oil spill that followed the explosion and sinking of a British Petroleum operated mobile offshore drilling rig in the Gulf of Mexico.
