The large stellate * From a section by Prof. Pierret, kindly lent me by Dr. Dreschfeld, CHEONIO MYELITIS. 339 spider cells are sometimes very conspicuous, and interstitialfibrous tracts may be traced to their ramifications. The nerve-fibres waste before the interstitial process, or undergodestructive changes from the beginning. They may at first presentthe change by which their myelin stains more deeply than normal;afterwards they become narrowed, and the axis-cylinder is oftenirregularly enlarged. Ultimately many or all the fibres disappear .r^^ ^ ^1 -J jQ. Fig. 105.—Chronic meningo-mjellfcis, due to alcohoH-m. Syrlngo-myelia,congenital, with central gliomatosis. A, lowest part of cervical enlaro-e-ment; pia mater thickened, and from it tracts of tissue extend into thecord. The greater part of the section is the seat of a diffuse myelitis,in which the nerve-fibres could be seen with difficulty, and were sepa-rated by inflammatory products. The grey matter was also affected, and the nerve-cells miuli changed. The clear spaces in the right appeared occupied by products of degeneration. Central canalgreatly dilated and surrounded by new growth, which in B (lumbar sec-tion) has obliterated the canal and thus caused its dilatation above. Inthis section the myelitis is chiefly peripheral, and the grey matter has,for the most part, escaped. from the affected area. Here and there the destruction of fibres maybe out of proportion to the increase in the interstitial tissue, so thatthickened and
