High-powered bulb. Researcher holding a high- powered arc lamp bulb at sunset. At full brightness this bulb generates light using thous- ands of watts of power. It will light up sports stadiums for evening games. Arc lamps use the bright light emitted by an electric arc (blue), a stream of electrons travelling between two electrodes. The central cylinder through which the arc is flowing contains halogen gas. This cylinder is made of quartz, a more resistant material than the surrounding glass oval. This researcher is from Siemens' Osram Sylvania Laboratory in Beverly, Massachusetts, USA.
