Pigeon houses ("Dovecotes") in Soganli Valley, Kayseri, Cappadocia, Anatolia, Turkey. The pigeons' presence was critical for the survival and the "economy" of the region, for monks and civilians alike, for many centuries. The pigeons were very useful in 3 ways: 1) were used as food, 2) the pigeon-sh*t, mixed with soil was used as fertilizer for the arid ground of Cappadocia, 3) they were the "postmen" or the messengers of that era.
