The Spanish Armada of 1588. 17th-century artwork of the ships of the Spanish Armada failing in their attempt to invade England in 1588. A series of pursuits and engagements took place along the English Channel in July and August 1588, from Cornwall to Kent, ultimately resulting in defeat for the Spanish at Gravelines on 8 August off Calais (left). The wind forced the Spanish northwards. The English army and beacon fires near Tilbury in the Thames estuary are at right. 4000 troops had been stationed at Tilbury, where Queen Elizabeth made a famous speech, also on 8 August. Artwork from 'A Thankfull Remembrance of Gods Mercy' (1624).
