Murphine, superintendentof public utilities of the city of Seattle,Wash., became the active head of thatcitys extended municipal electric rail-way system, with a trackage of 224miles, on April 1, when the city com-pleted the purchase of the railway linesof the Puget Sound Traction, Light &. T. F. MURPHINE Power Company. Mr. Murphine waspreviously superintendent of the 18-milemunicipal railway line which the cityhad installed. He thus becomes theprincipal operating official of perhapsthe largest city electric railway systemof the Pacific Coast and by far thelargest municipal electric railway prop-erty in the United States. Mr. Murphinewas born in Hillsboro, Ohio, on July 7,1878, and settled in Seattle in April,1883. He was graduated from theUniversity of Washington at Seattle,with the degree B. A. in 1898, and fromthe School of Law at the University ofWashington in 1907. He was a memberof the 1913 and 1915 sessions of theWashington State Legislature and wasa leader of the Progressive and munici-pal ownership forces in these twosessions. During the 1917 session ofthe Legislature he was Assistant At-torney General, assigned to the billdrafting department. He continued inthis capacity until April 1, 1918, whenhe was appointed superintendent ofpublic utilitie
