Having madefinal proof three years later, he bought a farm nearStanwood and engaged energetically in its subjuga-tion and cultivation. The ensuing year (1888) hewas elected county surveyor, for he had never aban-doned entirely the practice of his profession. Thiswas his first county oflice, but from that time onpublic aftairs claimed a considerable share of hisattention. In 1892 he was the choice of the peoplefor assessor. His labors in the discharge of theduties of that oflice were truly herculean, for hetook upon himself the task of making plats of allthe land in the county and substituting the presentscientific method of assessing for the old, unsci-entific and unsatisfactory one. Perhaps this washis most noteworthy contribution to the good ofSnohomish county. In 1894 he was elected auditorand two years later he received the unanimousnomination of the Republican party for the same.
