Ilfracombe slates Devon

Wildersmouth beach is a pretty sand and shingle beach very close to the town in Ilfracombe. It lies in a sheltered cove with rocks and a rocky cliff on the western side and views over Ilfracombe looking east. At high tide the beach is almost completely submerged by water. Ilfracombe overlies slates formed from sedimentary rock that underwent geological stress (creating faults and folds), towards the end of the Carboniferous Period, around 300 million years ago. These are known as the Ilfracombe slates.
