Illustration - sense of touch

An illustration of the sense of touch mechanism in the nerve tissue, spinal cord and brain. Neural receptors in the skin transfer sensations of touch to bipolar neurons in the peripheral nerve fibres (pink), which in turn relay information to neurons in the spinal cord, and ultimately the cerebral cortex of the brain. Over stimulation can lead to cell destruction, shown here in blue.
