Redwood tree "fairy ring" in Armstrong Redwood Grove, Guerneville, CA.
Regeneration You will see many groupings of redwoods like this one in the Armstrong Redwood Grove, Guerneville, CA. These are sometimes called fairy rings. When a redwood is damaged by fire wind or an axe, the tree's root system sprouts around the remaining stump. When you see a circle of redwoods growing out of a depression in the ground you can be sure they are growing from the place where the parent tree once stood. This is the most prolific way for redwoods to reproduce. Although redwoods produce millions of tiny seeds each year the germination rate is very low. This is because the seeds cannot penetrate the thick layer of decomposing plant material called duff that covers the forest floor.
