Upon the plaster model of the lower jaw, obtained andrectified in this way, the vulcanite is moulded, embracing the teeth andthe steel arms ; the latter, constructed of wire, one-sixteenth of aninch in diameter, rise abruptly at points corresponding to the angles ofthe mouth, curve forward and then outward, so that, when in position, the two outer extremities shall terminate over the surface of the cheekat a point nearly opposite the base of the coronoid process. When theapparatus is applied the teeth must be pushed into the sockets of thesplint with some force. The dressing is now completed by a sling 1 Beans. Richmond Med. Jour., Feb., 1866. If teeth are only loosened at the point of fracture they should be per-mitted to remain ; but if they are much displaced it is better to removethem entirely. If portions of the alveolar sockets are broken, but theirattachments to the soft parts are not much disturbed, they should alsobe replaced, since in many cases they mil under these circumstancesbecome reunited.
