Since the completion of the extensive harbourworks of the West Indian Company, Ltd., however,the old East Asiatic docks and coaling station haveremained practically unused. During the second half of the year 1914 the WestIndia line was run somewhat irregularly, owing to thewar. The total number of callings at St. Thomas werenevertheless somewhat numerous, as the companysships, which passed through the Panama Canal, allcalled at St. Thomas to discharge cargo for trans-shipment to the Antilles. About this time the workon the new harbour in Longbay for the new WestIndian Co., Ltd., in which the East Asiatic Co.,Ltd., held controlling shares, and under whose directionthe preliminary surveys were made, was drawing to acompletion, and on the 4th of December, 1915, official
