The native species are handsome shrubs of medium size, with fine \ax:^c loaves, fronerally rf a light green color, and perfectly hardy. The introductions from Japan and China, are particularly interesting and valuable. H. pan- iculata gran'diflora is remarkable in foliage and flower, and being perfectly hardy, is of great value. The other Japanese varieties, like the H. hnrtensia, require protecti(m in winter.
