Monastery in Lachin corridor the only land entrance to Nagorno Karabakh from Armenia proper and is vital for the Armenian forces to remain in control of the territory. Disputed between Armenia and Azerbaijan after both countries became independent in 1991 when the Soviet Union collapsed, Nagorno-Karabakh is claimed for historical reasons.
