Model of chymotrypsin and an inhibitor. In this molecular graphics rendering, chymotrypsin is shown in green, its inhibitor is in red, and the small blue objects are water molecules. Chymotrypsin is a protease, a type of enzyme which hydrolyses peptide bonds in proteins and peptides. The inhibitor molecule prevents this hydrolysis as it occupies the active sites of the protease molecule. This image was made at the European Synchrotron Radiation Facility (ESRF) at Grenoble, France.
