Flagellum of a Trypanosoma brucei protozoan, fast fourier transform (FFT) image. Fourier transformation is a technique for filtering digital images. It works by transforming an image into a series of spatial frequencies that can then be transformed back into an image after editing. It is useful for removing noise, or the 'herringbone' pattern sometimes seen in moving images. T. brucei is a parasitic protist that is transmitted by an insect vector, the tsetse fly. Infection causes African trypanosomiasis, also known as sleeping sickness.
