Opioid receptor membrane protein, illustration. Opioid receptors are dimeric (made of two identical subunits) membrane proteins. The subunits align by forming a four-helix bundle at the protein-protein interface. Each subunit binds an opioid molecule (red) near the outer surface of the membrane. The receptor proteins also include G-protein domains (not shown here) that pass along a signal to the cell when opioids bind to the receptor sites.
