Vis-itors afoot may reach the Observatory by following NewYork av. W. of the State, War, and Navy Department to ESt. N., thence by the latter to 24th st. W. Grounds.—The Observatory occupies a commanding siteon the N. bank of the Potomac, 96 ft. above tide, and origin-allj^ known as Peters Hill, after its proprietor. The beauti-ful grounds comprise 19 a. within tlie walls, and constituteReservation No. 4 on tlie original plat of the NAVAL OBSERVATORY. There are many interesting historical associations connected with the site. In 1755portion of Braddocks army camped here on the march from Alexandria to the fatalfield on the Monongahela. On the Potomac bank is a rock upon which the troopswere landed, and known as Braddocis rock. In 1792 it was proposed to erect ti fortand barracks on the N. portions of the reservation. It was a favorite project withWashington to establish a national university here. The grounds were named Uni-versify Square from this fact. In i8i3-i4 part of the American army encamped onthe hill, from which fact it was long known as Camp if///, and advanced to Bladens-burg for the defense of the city against the English.
