Selingue, Mali, 26th April 2015; Seydou Traore, 21, (black t-shirt) Baissa Keita, 20, (brown and white shirt) and Modibo Keita, 19. The field belongs to their father, and measures half a hectare. They use both organic and chemical fertilizers, as the land is poor. Their father would like to get some new soil but can’t afford it. They pay 35,000 CFA per season for the irrigation water. Normally one hectare of rice requires 4 sacks of NPK and 4 sacks of Uree fertilizer. This costs 100,000 CFA per hectare. From Selingue the farmer can usually get 5 to 6 tons of rice per hectare. 10 sacks for one ton of rice and maize each can sell for 12,500 per sack, so 120,000 CFA per ton or for 5 tons total value is 600,000 CFA per hectare for the rice.
