Down even to the close of last century it wasmerely a large village, and its rapid expansion duringthe next five decades was due to the opening up of therich beds of coal and ironstone around it, to facilities ofcommunication with the markets and outlets of the West,and to its share in the weaving orders of Glasgow manu-facturers. It was made a burgh of barony in 1821, oneof the five Falkirk parliamentary burghs in 1832, anda municipal bm-gh in 1849 ; prior to 1871 it partly. Arms o£ Airdrie. adopted the General Police and Improvement Act. Go-verned by a provost, 3 bailies, and 12 councillors, withtreasurer, to^vn-clerk, and procurator-fiscal, Airdrie uniteswith Falliirk, Hamilton, Lanark, and Linlithgow, inretiUTiing 1 member to parliament; and its municipaland parliamentary constituency was 1802 in 1881. Airdriehas a post ofiice, with money order, savings bank, insur-ance, and telegraph departments ; branches of the Bankof Scotland, and of the Clydesdale, National, and Royalbanks ; a temperance and a penny savings bank, 27 in-surance offices, a gas-light company, a water company,conjointly with Coatbridge, a fire brigade, a prison(legalised 1859; 51 cells), a fever hospital, 3 hotels, arace-course, and two Satmday newspapers—the AirdrieAdvertiser (1855) and the Airdrie and Coatbridge (1879).
