Konkan Laterite (Iron-clay),The Konkan laterite is worked to a small extent^ where richly hsema-. titic, as an iron ore, and is smelted in small clay-built furnaces, of one ofwhich the annexed figures show the elevation and section from drawingsby Mr. Wilkinson. These small furnaces,-called battis, are used in many parts of the small state of Sawant Wad. Whencharged, the elliptical or rectangu-lar-shaped opening in front isclosed by a mass of soft clay inwhich two holes are left for thepassage of the two tuyeres whichare directed downwards. Thethird hole at the top is left open, but is closed with a lump of claywhen reduction is taking placeand the contents are sinking down, eing opened from time to timefor the passage of an iron rodto push down the contents ofthe furnace. The ore is hrstcrushed into a coarse powder andthen placed in alternate layerswith the charcoal ,• the lowestcourse consisting of charcoal. Alluvial kankar or calcareoustufa is used largely for lime.
