A woman holds and comforts her grandson while standing in line waiting for breakfast at a migrant shelter north of Mexico City
After almost a year of simmering conflict the Juan Diego Migrant shelter in the Lecheria neighborhood north of Mexico City, was symbolically closed by neighbors complaining of drugs, crime and unsanitary conditions on their streets. The Catholic Church, which runs the sanctuary for economic refugees from Central America, then officially closed it on Monday July 9, 2012, leaving the migrants with only a temporary tent for shelter. Mirna Ortiz Hernandez, of Puerto Triunfo El Salvador, gives a bottle of infant formula to her grandson, Stiven Govani Choto Gonzalez, 7 months, inside the temporary shelter. Both were traveling by freight train to the US with their extended family.
