Geological fault diagram. This diagram, showing the structure of a geological fault, is taken from Principles of Geology, a ground-breaking three-volume work published from 1830-1833 by Charles Lyell (1797-1875), a British geologist. Lyell developed a new understanding of geological processes by studying surface irregularities such as faults, fissures, stratigraphic displacements and depressions.
