In1839 Ilinkley & Drury began building lo-comotors and John Souther went towork for them as pattern maker, andunder lock anil ki \ m ide all the patternsfor their first engine, the Lion, Three. JOHN SOUTHER. years later he started the Globe Locomo-tive Works in South Boston and wentvigorously into the business of locomotivebuilding. He had been thus engagedwhen the Tredegar Works of Richmondprevailed upon him to join them in loco-motive building, and accordingly hemoved most of his machinery and a largeforce of men to Richmond. That lineof work was carried on until the warbroke out, which ended Mr. Southerscareer as a locomotive builder. John Souther invented the first suc-cessful dredger, also the first steam shovel,effecting many improvements upon thesedevices and bringing them up to present-day appliances. From Mr. Southers fac-tory in Boston a steam excavator wassent to Peru to dig gold, which was thebeginning of a good trade in that line, atrade that embraced Great Britain, Japan,the Amoor River, Russia and the Trans-Caspian.
