Leslie (Laszlo) Balassa (1903-1992), Hungarian-US chemist. Born in Hungary at the time of the Austro-Hungarian monarchy, Balassa was awarded a doctorate in chemistry from the University of Vienna in 1926. During his career, he worked in Mexico as a metallurgist, and spent 14 years as a research chemist at the Du Pont chemical company. From 1944, he founded companies that manufactured his inventions. These included the pharmaceutical research and development company Lescarden Ltd. His many patents included micro-encapsulation, painkillers for tooth extractions, and research into the use of bovine cartilage (Catrix) for treating arthritis.
