Molluscum contagiosum, coloured electron micrograph (SEM). Molluscum contagiosum is a viral infection of the human skin sometimes called water warts. It is caused by a DNA pox virus called the molluscum contagiosum virus (MCV). Large numbers of red pox virus particle are contained in an infected cell called a molluscum body. Although highly infectious most people are immune to the virus with mainly young children, the sexually active and people with a weaken immune system affected. Magnification: x8000 when printed at 10 centimetres wide.
