The State Teachers Association was organized in1850; endowed libraries began to appear; some of theschools of academic grade were founded which havelasted on, doing good work to the present time ; thework of the colleges went on nobly. Among the gradu-ates of Middlebury College were young men who weredestined to make educators, authors, scholars, statesmen,and college presidents. Its graduatesserved in the second Seminole War, and have servedin every subsequent war of the country. No less thantwo hundred and seventy-three commissioned officersfrom this institution served in the Mexican and Civil wars.
