Drain-age is out of the question and duringthe summer heat the effluvium isunbearable. One main thoroughfareruns through the village and is theonly approach to anything in thenature of a street. About one and half miles east commander of the taku Taku is a settlement of British, Americans, and Germans whocarry on the occupation of pilots. The navigation of the Pei-horiver and the Gulf of Pechili is entirely in their hands. Likethe native huts the European houses are built of mud, but on amore elaborate scale, being fitted with verandas. The port of Arnoy is situated on an island off the coast of theprovince of Fu-kien and almost opposite the center of the island ofFormosa. The Chinese name for the city is Hai-meu, or the gateof the sea. It is built on rising ground at the foot of mountainswhich rise to three or four thousand feet in height and overlooksone of the finest and most spacious harbors in the world, which liesin the crescent between the island city and the mainland character and natural location it greatly resembles the Britishport of Hong Kong. Arnoy is the port of the city of Chang-chou-fu, which lies onthe mainland a short distance up the Lung river. Its populationis about 150,000 and in early
