Sometime ago the statement was made bya well known insurance company, thatmore people are killed by tripping orfalling in poorly lighted areas, thanare killed by automobiles in the Un-ited States. It is also stated, that inan analysis made of 91,000 industrialaccidents 24 per cent were due whollyor in part to inadequate years have brought about. Fig. 4.—A few barrels of whitewash sprayedon the dark walls. great improvement in foundry design,and in the planning of modern build-ings the most careful consideration isgiven to their design, and location, sothat the fullest daylight illuminationpossible may be obtained throughoutall seasons of the year. The impor-tance of this is shown by an investi-gation made a few years ago by JohnCalder, of fatal accidents in the UnitedStates shops, which showed that thenumber of accidents in the dark win-ter months, was about forty per centhigher than in the lighter summermonths. Men work with a greater sense ofsecurity and exactness in the welllighted shop, and the spoilage is min-imized. Planning For Sunlight To those of us who are familiarwith the discomforts and inconvenien-ces due to the poorly lighted conditionof some of the older shops, it shouldbe gratifying to see the improvementsthat are being made in the newerfoundry buildings; where the closestattent
