A portrait of Buddy Rich
Buddy Rich was born On 30 September 1917 was a child prodigy. At 20 he started playing with Joe Marsala's band, he later played with Bunny Berrigan, Artie Shaw, Tommy Dorsey, Bennie Carter, Harry James, and Jazz at The Philarmonic, as well as leading his own band. His most popular performance was an arrangement of 'West Side Story'. His version of 'The Beat Goes On' was also remarkable. Buddy Rich also had a remarkble short temper and would gather the band together to tell them how awful they were. There was a secret recording made of this one night. But despite his threats he was never known to sack anybody. He was known for his speed, technique and power to imrovise on the drums. He died 2 April 1987.
