Brachiopod province III, dominated by orthids and spiriferids, broadly overlaps province II in southwestern Virginia, but there is no marked stratigraphic separation of the faunas. In the southern part of the mixed zone the linguloids of province II disappear suddenly, but Orthorhynchula linneyi is gradu- ally outnumbered by Hebertella sinuate.
